Lara Assouad

Lara Assouad is a Lebanese graphic- and type designer with a particular interest in the relation between Arabic and Latin writing systems and multicultural identities. Lara holds a Bachelor in Graphic design from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon and a post-graduate degree in typography from the Atelier National de Recherche Typographique in Nancy, France.

In 2006, during the first edition of the 'Typographic Matchmaking' project initiated by Khatt Foundation in Amsterdam, Lara collaborated with Fred Smeijers, co-developing the Fresco Arabic designs. Fresco Arabic received Type Directors Club Certificate of Excellence in Type Design in 2008.

Lara's most recent work includes two children's books (created in collaboration with Dar Onboz, Tabati and Aswat al Abjadiyyah), which were exhibited at the Haus Der Kunst in Munich, Germany and at Agial Art Gallery in Beirut, Lebanon in 2010. Tabati, the typeface Lara developed for the two books, was awarded the Type Directors Club Certificate of Excellence in Type Design in 2011. Lara received the 2012 Opera Prima Award of the Bologna Children's Book Fair for the illustrations, type design and layout of Tabati book.

Lara lives and works in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
